Since the hiatus of Californian neo-hippie psych-country-folk collective Beachwood Sparks, its members have spawned half a dozen side projects. The latest Beachwood Sparks-related "happening" is a collaboration between co-founder Chris Gunst, his partner Jen Cohen, and left-field hip-hop exponent Elvin Estela, aka DJ Nobody, which captures the original sun-kissed, kaleidoscopic essence of this now far-flung, starry-eyed gaggle of LA flower children. From the opening raga beats of The Seed to Gunst's gentle, dreamy voice and nature-worshipping lyrics, to the acid-blotter cover art, Tree Colored See is high on summer-of-love grooviness. Yet there is nothing pretentious or overblown about this unhurried, intimate record. As befits his moniker, Nobody is an unobtrusive influence; his laid-back, organic beats feel wholly natural beneath Mystic Chords of Memory's pastoral folk/pop simplicity. Stand-outs include the warm keyboard-driven groove of "Broaden a New Sound" and the feel-good escapism of "Walk in the After Light." - The Age |
