Teaming up with pseudo-Dj Nobody, husband and wife duo Chris Gunst and Jen Cohen - better known as Mystic Chords of Memory - push the boundaries of indie-pop for a seemly uniform sound that cannot be haphazardly tossed into a pick-and-choose genre. While far from pretentious, Nobody & MCOM display striding confidence, jumping from the psychadelic and soulful "Decisions, Decisions," to a golden take on early '70s pop with "Broaden a New Sound." No matter how extravagant the music may become, Gunst's melancholic vocals continue as a constant layer throughout the album. You could read the lyrics if you wanted, but the music satisfies enough. Far from any standard pigeonholing, Tree Colored See is an enchanting album. - Synthesis |
