Boy In Static, a.k.a. Boston's Alexander Chen, is an impressive one-man symphony who creates pretty and ambient soundscapes that are best heard on headphones or fantastic speakers. His second album, Violet, takes the template of his well-regarded glitchy debut, Newborn, and adds a guitar-heavy shoegazer sheen. The guitar riff in "Where It Ends" is as arresting as an Interpol song abutted by glorious strings at the climax. "Immortal" is another highlight, starting with mild guitar and catchy organ, becoming fuzzier, grander, and more spacious as it expands with solid thumping percussion. Chen's pleasant singing is the least vital part of the music, floating in and out as a breathy backdrop. Tracks such as the closer, "Leave You Blind," showcase Chen's talent. Like the rest of this album, it sticks with you with its weird noises, becoming a pretty and foreboding anthem. - Boston Globe |
