As a member of LA's Project Blowed Crew, Busdriver has confirmed his place among the indie hip-hop elite. His own brand of avant, left-field rhymes and abstract beats have made him a self-proclaimed underground star. To help bring his unique electronica enthused production to life; Busdriver has enlisted the help of some of the underground's hottest producers including Count Daelulus, Paris Zax and much respected knob twister, Danger Mouse. The album itself is a combination of sonic elements. Observational and clever lyrical knot twisting feature heavily through out the record. "Happiness('s Unit of Measurement)" speedy rhymes, energetic delivery and dry humour demonstrates Busdriver's impeccable sense of timing and elastic wit. The rock tinged "Unemployed Black Astronaut" is a definite stand out track with an infectious quirky chorus and melodic guitar rifts. Its title alone should make you curious enough to pick it up from a shelf in a record store! Tracks like "Cool Band Buzz" and the first single from the album, "Avantcore" end up setting the blueprint for much of what is to follow. Humorous anecdotes about the perils of being an indie rapper, combined with Busdriver ability to spit manic rhymes and general hyper hurdy Gurdy make Fear of a Black Tangent more then interesting listen. Although, this may not fit neatly in your collection between Ja Rule and Xzibit, Busdriver's aim seems to be to get us to think outside the box when it comes to the sound hip-hop, and in a time when the industry is saturated with cliché rhymes about ice, cars and chicks, Fear of a Black Tangent makes for a refreshing change. - Big Smoke |
