LA based Daedelus adds to his extensive back catalogue with perhaps his most unusual work to date, sharpening his toolbox to reach a somewhat creative peak. Opening with the bizarrely arranged "Dearly Departed," Daedelus merges romantic string arrangements with hip-hop beats and avant-garde electronics quite sumptuously. "Impending Doom" follows suit, with amourous 30's-sounding movie-reel samples giving way to a pulsating rap - somehow this wacky blend pays dividends. "Just Briefly" and "Move On" (with Sci of Scienz of Life) use the same template, adding steadier beats whilst splicing up the arrangements into a frenzied carve up. However, through the mess of samples, percussion and loops, Daedelus wisely throws in the odd repetitive hook or sample, it's the only thing that glues the fabric of these tracks together. "Welcome Home" plays it a little straighter, with female vocals purring over a dank background. Fizzing samples spit and swirl around a stable hip-hop beat, and acoustic guitar later joins to give the track a more focused, downtempo vibe. Exquiste Corpse then saunters through some deeper elements of rap and hip-hop; the background terrain persisting with the use of string-based samples, piano trinkles and plucked guitar, giving the album a permanently surreal embodiment. - Barcode |
