Named after a tragic Greek mythological figure, dressed an Edwardian dandy, and a concept album based on a surrealist parlour game. Pretentious, moi? Well possibly, but if your Las Daedelus, cut-up addict and possessor of a bulging address book full of underground hip-hop's cognoscenti, who cares? While previous Daedelus productions has a tendency to come unstuck like Icarus, Exquiste Corpse is a much stronger proposition, a fusion of musique concrete, toy percussion, acoustic source recordings rewired from the 40s - accordions, cheesy strings and jittery electronic beats, all with a guestlist to die for. MF Doom appears on what sounds like a drummer being pushed down a flight of stairs, and Mike Ladd adds typical sonic awareness to "Welcome Home." Up there with Prefuse 73 and Boom Bip, this Daedelus constructs a musical labyrinth you won't mind getting lost in. - Rock Sound |
