This is hip-hop without a beat. I guess that's the point. Although I always thought hip-hop had to have a beat. I thought that was, at least, the second most important thing outside of the lyrics. But, nope! It turns out it doesn't have to have a beat... or soul. It can actually sound like a couple of white guys playing college rock with computers... and it's still hip-hop. That's a cool (and interesting) thing. Only, I thought it was called techno. Cause it sounds a hell of a lot more like Cornelius than DMX. Cornelius on acid. Can you imagine? Well, you don't have to. It's that spaced out, right here, on this very CD. This is as experimental as any hip-hop I've ever heard. I mean, it's so experimental it doesn't even sound like hip-hop. The lyrics are so out there, only a stone schizophrenic is going to know what the hell these guys are talking about. But, it doesn't matter. This is good nod music. I like listening to it and falling asleep. That's not because it's boring. It's because it evokes strange dreams. Dreams of "wood man and his splintering self" or "an ant with an African mask," for instance, wouldn't be that unusual. Yup! It's that out there. My favorite lyric is "Abraham Lincoln never got offed, because it wasn't on the television." It's just another example of how surreal ideas in lyrical content and music are interwoven to create a truly unique CD. I suggest you check it out and expand your mind. There's always room for something different. And this is VERY different. - Indie Workshop |
