Decomposition by Thavius Beck is definitely one to check for: dense and questing instrumental hip-hop and chopped beats are blended with all sorts of modern production into an indie electronic post-genre mush, while Thavius himself and a few guest emcees get stuck into some intense and explorative thematics and styles. The whole thing is a bit of a conceptual assault, with vocal samples talking about abnormal psychology texts, babbling in German, giving simplistic motivational speeches, describing the "judgement of all movies" with schizophrenic passion, or reading from Revelations. Thavius feels the strain of complexity, but holds it together well, with thick layers of synth chords, mutated melodic loops, and plenty of attention to detail throughout. It's not easy or particularly soothing, but it is intelligent, well-crafted, and forward thinking music for an increasingly confused world, and will reward repeated plays. - Undercover |
