Going in off the deep end and landing in leftfield Los Angeles, K-The-I??? lets off El-P-honouring cluster bombs and sonic booms. "Before the Session" and the dystopian "Lead The Floor" – talking of Def Jux, there's Camu Tao's "Hold the Floor" given a brutal reboot - boast synths that'll break the sound barrier and tell you how advanced the question marked-Nostradamus likes his mathematics. Gripping hard-shelled space funk where the quietest moments are manhandled just as callously, the G-forces of producer Thavius Beck rattle cheekbones for K to wade into, all sci-fi sabres blazing. It’s a shot from outside right that’s verbose without being frustrating or unfriendly; the sounds are extra terrestrially intimidating but not uninviting, and the chaos is a challenge, but done, well… Orderly. The coordinates plot collision courses, yet K’s ever-enthusiastic stockpiling of verbs, like Vast Aire were he to stop shrugging and start pulling his finger out, means Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow won’t simply burnt out into the atmosphere. Adventuring at a fair lick, "Cell-Shaded/Daydreams/Nightmares" doesn’t hold back on dictionary-devouring consciousness as the over-egged title sells. The use of poodle-haired, screeching stairways to heaven on the consecutive ‘Never Heard It Done Like This’ and "Just Listen" gives The I a silver-suited superhero welcome. "Let's Make Moves" essentially turns into a booty-hunting club banger, while "Stylin'" sounds like the triumphant homecoming fanfare for the returning cosmonaut, multiplying the syllables for a hero's welcome. Well accompanied by indie tunnellers Busdriver, Nocando and Mestizo, K-The-I??? is a super-sharp shooter for all the time-zones he covers. - Fact |
